Left with only one thing to tell her who she is… or was… at the age of thirteen the Master of the Orphanage gave her only one thing. A piece of paper that read: Athena M. B. born on May 26 … the year was unreadable for it had be scratched out two or three times. Was she really thirteen like the Master had told her or was she younger… perhaps older, no one but the Master knew, and upon questioning punished Athena. She was truly alone, and now more then ever scared. She was older then all of the other girls in the home so she deemed it was time she left. Maybe to find her place in the word, Maybe it was to look for her rightful parents, Maybe she just needed to be free of those prison type walls. With her age at the right place the Master had no choice but to let Athena go. Now standing at the fork in the road that was a mile away from the Home she stared into the deep abyss of snow trying to decide which way she should go. Finally choosing the Left path she headed into what would either be a rotten fate, bad luck in life, or even worse… death. By that night she had come upon a town called Carvahall. The place seemed nice enough to her. Then again she was known to be wrong about a lot of things. She wondered around the town for awhile before finding a nice place to stay. A nice old sword smith had taken pity on her and allowed her to sleep in the stables with his horses, but she had to be willing to help him with the stables when he needed. Saying he was getting too old to do such work along. Athena agreed happily, for she loved animals and that night slept with two horses and an old cow. With in the next five years the old man took her into his home and raised her as a daughter of his own. She worked in his stables with his horses and his one cow, and then she would help him try out the swords he had crafted. Soon with in such a life she learned the sword pretty well, although mastering the skill for her would take quite a bit of time, for Athena discovered she had a habit of being clumsy. One night Athena and the Old man, Dante, were sitting around the fire when Dante happened to ask Athena more about her past. With such a short tale to tell Athena was done quickly. Dante was quite for quite a time after she was finished before he nodded and gave her a grin. “You shall be called Athena Marie Wargrave. Take the name with pride Athena. Marie was my wife’s name, god rest her soul, and Wargrave is an honorable name within it’s self.” With that Athena now had a name that carried meaning. With in two weeks the old man took sick and due to his age passed on with the sickness. Stunned Athena didn’t know where to turn. The town although had taken a liking to the hard working female had to take her house and everything away from her for she wasn’t blood family to Dante Wargrave. Now with no where to live, no one to turn to, and really no reason to live Athena set off for the depths of the woods to either die alone, or thrive on her own… which ever took her first. A nice cave was found, upon entrance she found the cave was inhabited by a pack of wolves. Athena respecting the animals started to leave when suddenly something struck her. “You don’t have to leave… you may stay. You are different and are welcomed among my pack.” Shocked she looked back at the pack to see the largest wolf staring right back at her. She shivered at the thought of him speaking to her and instantly called herself insane… although compelled to ask. “You are different young one… for you can understand me as I can understand you strangely enough. I had a feeling about you when you entered the cave. Now hush… you’ll wake the others.” So now she knew she had a rare gift indeed. Now the question in her mind was ‘who am i?’ and ‘how can I talk to animals?’ With not much else to turn to she stayed in the cave with the wolves. Over the next few months they had to teach her how to hunt. Slowly she became one of the pack, she enjoyed running free with the wolves and with much practice she learned that she could communicate with animals without ever uttering a word. The forest soon grew to accept her as just another animal. Her free time in the forest would be short lived though as one night she stumbled upon a dark, handsome man walking though the forest. The man’s name was Luther Deroga. Luther fought hard to win Athena’s heart and upon achieving his goal convinced her that living and running free with animals wasn’t fit for a young lady such as herself. With a lot of pressuring from Luther she moved into the house he owned and left behind her freedom and friends in the forest. Athena however never grew to trust Luther with the idea of her gift. Keeping that secrete to herself for her own safety she figured. She spent a grueling six years with Luther in his home, tortured by the desire to be free in the forest once again. She had tried running away many times but Luther had become possessive and always seemed to know when she was on the run. Would hunt her down and bring her back. She still loved him but didn’t understand why he wouldn’t let her be out on her own. Slowly over the years she became depressed and found life worthless to live, upon one day of hating life and wishing to be free so badly she took a dagger and ran deep gashes into her wrists, starting from the bottom of her hand running three or so inches towards her elbow. She quickly lost blood and blacked out. Luther found her hours later, she was barely breathing and near death. Cursing the gods for such a woman to have fallen for he did the unthinkable. In his quest to not lose her he went without her permission and changed her life forever. The next night Athena woke in her room, although there weren’t any lights on in the room she could see every detail of the room as if it were daylight. Her hearing was amazing as she heard the mice in the wall, the cooks in the kitchen, and even the animals roaming around out side. Suddenly a strange hunger gripped Athena with such a force she had only one thing to do… she screamed in pain. Luther with no remorse for his actions was pushed to tell Athena what he had done. And When he was done explaining it to her she became enraged. Athena threatened to walk into the sun and dispose the world of her existence. Luther begged and pleaded with her to rethink her thoughts and offered anything in return for her to live. With a sly grin on her face she nodded and uttered only one word. “Freedom.” Taking it upon herself she left Luther taking with her seven objects to help her on her journey. She took four outfits he had given her, a bag of money to hopefully last, and she took Lucas and Alexander, Luther’s prized black cats. Now to travel the world alone in a world of darkness as one of the horrible undead…. Within later few years however she was giving the chance to live once again in the light. Finding a wizard that had the power and means and for payment in saving his life, he created what is called a MoonStoneRing. Once placed upon the finger of an undead they are able to walk in the sun as any normal person, although their skin is sensitive to burn, eyes are sensitive to the sunlight, and hair will lose color or be “sun bleached” rather quickly Athena is now able to spend time in the sunlight of the day. |

Her horse: Mercury Saved from being put down. |
She sat on the edge of the bed looking out the small window watching the sun slowly set in the west. Dread quickly spread over her as she saw the sun slowly falling behind the tops of the trees in the distance. She moves to stand, the sound of rattling chains coming to her ears. She didn’t have to look down to remember where she was. A room inside Luther’s home, shackled and chained to the floor to keep her from running away. Luther only came out at night and he refused to trust her not to run again during the day. He had enchanted her into coming and living in his home, but had made the mistake of underestimating her and thinking with one push of enchantment she would be his forever. She had pushed back and gotten though the enchantment and had tried to run. Once she knew what he was doing he was unable to put her under again. He was reduced to chaining her up here in this room. She walked till the chains pulled her to a stop with a sigh she turned around and saw the sun was gone behind the trees and the sky was going from a nice reddish yellow color to a gray color. She felt like crying but wouldn’t give in to it. She was stronger then that. And she knew he wanted to see her weak balling at his feet begging to be let go. That was what he liked, what got him all hot. She had seen the way his sniveling servants had made him hot before. She had to deal with that hot ‘passion’ as he called it. She didn’t like it, she never had since the first time. Even when enchanted she dreaded when he came to her. She went still when she heard foot steps out in the hall. She looked out the window to look at the sky, it was still somewhat pink outside. He had never risen this early before. She felt her body shiver a bit wishing she have just ten more minutes to prepare for his rising. The key was turned in the lock and the door slowly swung open. Dolla stepped in and rushed over to her. “My child, we ain’t got time. Listen and do as I say. One mistake and we both vamp dinner.” Dolla pulled out a key and shoved it in the hole of the shackles around her wrists. They both fell to the floor with a clank. Athena was shocked at the gesture, Dolla was putting her life on the line to help Athena? “Dear you must leave now. You got about half an hour to get as far from here as you can. Take River with you, he’ll be sure to travel fast.” Athena shook her head even as she was heading for the door. “I can’t take your horse Dolla, how will you get away from here. You must come with me, if you don’t he’ll surely kill you.” Dolla pushed hard at Athena’s back and erging her towards the stairs. Athena knew what Dolla was giving up. There was no risking when it came to Luther. He was the type that you crossed once and you were dead. But she didn’t understand why Dolla was giving her life for Athena’s. Dolla had always treated her like a daughter, maybe even thought she was, but that still didn’t answer why Dolla had waited so long to help her. “Child don’t you worry about me. Master has some mean plans for you tonight and if you don’t leave now without another word you’ll have no choice in the matter. Now go!” she gave Athena another forceful shove, and Athena knowing the barest extent of Luther’s powers didn’t want to see his full extent. So she quickly took off down the stairs. She had to force her mind to stop spinning and her heart to pound at normal speed. She didn’t like the feeling she was getting and wanted to be far away from it, she knew that if she panicked she would be doomed. She flew across the main hall towards the doors at the end, and without slowing her pace pushed them open with full force of her body weight. River was outside saddled and ready to go. Xander, one of the young stable hands was holding on to the horse for her. Tears almost welled in her eyes at how young he was. She knew by the simple act of holding the horse for her that he would die at the hands of Luther as well. She took the reigns and mounted quickly. “Xander, Run to the stables and push this happening from your mind. If you wish to live you will not think of me again.” With that she kicked the horse into full gallop as she headed away from Luther’s home as fast as the horse could carry her. The horse was remarkable the way he seemed to know where he was going, she didn’t know how to ride one for she had always feared them. She didn’t have to lead him or anything, he led himself around trees, rock, and bushes. Her only thought was to say on the animal, instinctively she reached out with her mind to her wolf friends and felt that they were already running along side the horse in the distance as protection for her. Luther woke as soon as the sun had set under the ground in the catacombs under the house. He reached out with his senses and immediately felt the absence of Athena in the house. Rage filled him to the point all he saw was red. He pushed out of the ground and stood in the catacombs reaching out further looking for her. Who ever had helped her get away will pay dearly, Athena belonged to him and no one else, not even herself. As soon as he felt her he simply shimmered into a cloud of mist and vanished. River stopped dead in his gallop with an angered whinny, his hooves pounding the ground. Athena sat atop him looking straight ahead as Luther shimmered before her until solid. Her heart fell to the pit of her stomach, she had a sickening feeling about what was coming. Luther took one step towards him before suddenly two large male wolfs jumped on him. She gasped as Luther struggled a moment then threw each wolf into a tree with little effort. Neither wolf moved a muscle. Suddenly River started backing up slowly stamping it’s hooves on the ground. “Athena,” Luther’s voice was merely a hiss. “Get off of River and the horse will live. Come here to me!” The horse moved, as if he knew what Luther was saying, as if to keep Athena from getting down. Athena’s great love for animals gave her no choice. She reached Rivers mind and held him still as she dismounted him and walked slowly towards Luther. When she was with in reach he reached out and grabbed her pulling her to him roughly. With out much warning River began to struggle with an unseen force. “Luther No… you said he would live… please I beg you spare his life!” Luther simply laughed at her. She watched in horror as River struggled then fell sideways, his legs kicking a few times before he fell completely still. She struggled to get free from Luther’s hold, tried to get to River. It was impossible, his grip on her was unbreakable. Then before she knew what had happened they were back in front of his house. Luther let go of Athena and threw her to the ground. “Why would you leave me?” His voice growing louder as he spoke. “I know you were unable to get out of that room by yourself. Tell me who helped you escape my grasp.” His voice told Athena he wasn’t messing around. She looked up at him, not willing to give him the satisfaction of fear she held it down, surpassed behind her large eyes. “No.” She put as much force and gall behind that one word that she was able to muster at that time. She winced visibly when she saw the anger growing to the point rage behind Luther’s eyes. His normally dark eyes flashed to an icy looking blue, proving just how angry he was at the moment. His eyes locked with hers and for a moment she was unable to look away from him. Instead of looking at her he seemed to be looking though her. She shivered before he removed his gaze his eyes flaring with rage. “Dolla, that ungrateful wench.” His eyebrows rose up a moment as if in disbelief. “Xander! How dare he.” She was afraid of how he knew that, some how he must have pulled the information from her mind. Or so she concluded. “Stay!” He moved towards the house and disappeared inside. She tried to move but found her body wouldn’t respond. Fear gripped her as she looked around wishing her feet and legs would move. Within moments Luther came back outside pulling Dolla behind him. The look on Dolla’s face and the horror of the realization that Athena hadn’t gotten away would haunt Athena’s dreams for the rest of her life she feared. Luther shoved the woman down to the ground forcefully and headed for the stables where he felt Xander’s presence. Moments later Xander was pulled from the stables to the area where Dolla and Athena were. That was when Athena let tears roll down her face, for at that moment she knew what Luther was going to do and it hurt her to think that she was the reason. She watched helpless as Luthen first picked up Dolla and kisses the woman’s neck. “Athena, love, look at me.” Athena’s gaze was locked onto Luther and Dolla she tried to pull away but something held her there, looking at him. “I want you to watch me as I take her life. Take her life for your deceit and her help in trying to free you from me. You know better then to do such a thing. You came here freely and with that you belong to me.” When Athena would have opened her mouth to protest she remained silent, hoping that maybe he would come out of his angered rage and realize that Dolla was his best servant. He didn’t, in stead he lowered his mouth to her neck once again and bit down. Dolla let out a short shriek before her eyes grew dark and hazy, full of lust from the sensation of giving blood. Athena continued to cry as she watched Dolla’s skin slowly become paler until she was white. She let out a gasp as she saw her eyes go dark and glaze over right before Luther let her bloodless body fall to the ground beside him. Only then was she able to remove her gaze from them and close her eyes to the sight. “Athena” Again that compelling voice called to her so that once again she had to look up. Only this time to see Luther clutching Xander in his arms. Athena choked at the sight and gave a small whimper. “Luther, please… he’s just a boy.” Luther looked at her for a moment before that evil smile of his crossed that face once again. “He knew the rules just as well as you did, and yet he disobeyed them. He knew the punishment was death.” Again she was forced to watch as Luther slowly drained the life from the little boy. Under the enchantment of the blood exchange the boy didn’t struggle. She hated that he had to die at such an young age and in such a degrading manner. Luther pushed Xander’s lifeless body down to the ground and headed for Athena. Suddenly she found the will to move, but she stood there waiting for her fate. She had no desire to live after watching Luther kill her two wolf friends, which undoubtedly left the female wolves and cubs without much protection, and her two friends that kept her sane during the months she had been locked up in that room. She felt sick to her stomach, like crying, which she was doing but not to the extent she felt she should be. Luther’s arms went around her waist and pulled her against his body roughly. “You’re punishment shall be the most enjoyable for me to give.” With that he grabbed her hair and pulled her towards the house. Forcefully he pulled her though the long hall and up to the room he had made her stay in for so long. Once inside the door seemed to slam on its own as he threw her on to the bed. Before she could recover he replaced the shackles on her wrists and pulled the slack so that she could do nothing but lie on the bed and await her punishment. She closed her eyes for she knew her death would be slow and painful at the hands of Luther. When she opened her eyes again she saw that Luther had left long enough to get a knife and come back with it. He was on top of her looking down at her. “Why would you break the rules dear?” The words he used were meant to sooth but did get that effect due to the low hiss in his voice. Luther spent the night searing her flesh with a scalding knife. Enjoying her screams and the pain her face held when contorted in such ways. When it neared dawn her body was destroyed from it’s natural beauty. Luther didn’t fear. He knew that with making her what he was she would heal normally and look just as beautiful as before. She was unconscious, having lost it the last time he pulled the scalding hot knife across her skin. He leaned down and licked her neck, feeling her weakened pulse under his tongue. He wasted no time knowing that Athena’s beloved life force was leaving her. And no matter how awful he treated her he would never let her die. He loved her too much. He bit down hard and drank what he needed from her body before biting his own wrist and forcing it to her lips. At first she didn’t respond to the blood in her mouth, then suddenly she gulped it down, latched on to his wrist and drank deeply from the wound on his wrist. He pushed her away when she had had enough to change her. He watched as her body began to heal the wounds on her body he had just given her. What a waste of time, he thought for a moment before picking her body up into his arms and carrying her down to the catacombs where he slept. Forever would he have his Athena by his side, was the last thought he had before he let himself fall into the dead sleep of vampires. |
